But the local boys and the village Sarpanch forbid them and in an argument, Ajji challenges the Sarpanch that her girls will defeat the Sarpanch’s boys in a Mallayuddha competition. The rest of the book contains the lead-up to the competition with a lot of anecdotal references to India’s vibrant culture of Mallavidya and how it has survived today
